In this video, we compare the differences between a Quartz-driven Rate Changer & a traditional synchro-motor driven one. Enjoy. :D OK, lets get into it then. The one to the left is the Quartz driven Rate Changer and the right-hand one is the synchro-powered one. Lets look at their characteristics for comparison: Unit's Supply Supply Main Rate Changer Model voltage Frequency contact (A) contact (Amps) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q345 / 346 240v 50/60Hz 100A 2A S317.1.22 240v 50Hz only 80A 2A ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Both have power cut backups. Unit's Model Backup type Backup duration --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q345 / 346 Battery, 1.2 volt 100 hours (4 days, 4 hrs) S317.1.22 Spring Reserve Unknown at time of video ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do keep in mind that the synchro motor driven unit is the older of the two Rate Changers and not by a few months or a year-or-few. This is why there is a switching capacity difference between the two, and not because Sangamo decided to somehow, make the Quartz model a 'better unit'. Really though, Horstmann had the lead in the 1970s with a 100A Rate Changer, and Sangamo never really caught up with that until the introduction of their quartz driven Rate Changers. __________________________________________ Click here to see a 100A Horstmann synchro-powered Rate Changer from 1970s: • Time Switch : Horstmann VA mk9 SRS 2 Rate ... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- If I had to take a guess, I would say at least a good decade or maybe even 15 years time difference between them. The Quartz driven model only became viable when electronics production came down to the same cost as making a synchro-driven model. The thing is though, with all the investment in electronics production and the eventual progression of electronics actually becoming cheaper through automation ( and dare I say it: Outsourcing) the synchro-motor timeswitches and Rate Changers were dropped, and not only by Sangamo! Of course, the death-knell for any Rate Changer or timeswitch that operated an half-decent load which was supplied as electricity board equipment was of course.... The Radio Teleswitch. ______________________________________ Click here to see a Radio teleswitch: • Time Switch : Radio Teleswitch, Sangamo Sc... -------------------------------------------------------------- What I will say on that though, is timeswitches and Rate Changers will eventually get their revenge: They have a "sting-in-the-tail" against the Radio Teleswitch. Long after Radio Teleswitches become extinct by the discontinuation of UK Long-Wave broadcasts.... The timeswitches and Rate Changers will live on as independently operating units. MEGA YAY. :D So, there it is. This video and the subjects in it can be found in the Time Switches and Rate Changers Playlist, along with a whole pile of others, so please do dive in there and have a look. :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Click here for the black-cased S317.1.22: • Time Switch : Sangamo Weston S317.1.22 Rat... ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Click here for the Q346 with the red clock face: • Time Switch : Sangamo Weston Q346 Rate Cha... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks for watching. -Wayne's Electrical.
