Plantar Fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia ligaments (which support the arches and run from the heel along the bottom of the foot) get damaged and inflamed. This 20-minute yoga sequence focuses on stretching the bottom of the foot and lower calf (along with the body in general). It also works into the hip flexors and here's why: limited mobility in the hips foreshortens the walking stride, and a shortened stride robs the back foot and heel of a natural stretch as the upper body moves forward. For those with severe or chronic fasciitis, the first order of business may be a visit to the doctor/physiotherapist. A regimen of yoga stretching and icing (and even a night splint), can help ease the symptoms. It takes patience and wisdom--overdoing it can exacerbate the condition.
