I had the opportunity to sit down with Steve Edwards of Queen Valley Mule Ranch recently to talk about training and some of the considerations about treating injuries. When should we start training for our next pack trip? Well, we should always be training. Whether you are a trail rider, mule packer or endurance rider, leaving an equine in a pasture or a corral for most of the year then expecting them to perform on a strenuous trip is foolish. If you were training for a marathon you wouldn’t wait until a few days before the race to try and get in shape, the same goes for our equines. Your equines can pull a muscle or a tendon. If you don’t know how to treat these injuries you could have a long, painful trip out. It is always a good idea to carry medical supplies for both you and your equines. Not only should you be prepared with a proper equine medical kit but you must also be trained how to use and administer treatment. Speak with your vet about administering medications.
