#japan #japaneseculture #shrine #tanzanjinja #tanzanshrine #culture #asia This is part 2 of our Japan Travel Series. We're in the Nara area and decided to bring Japan to you since some of you can make it to Japan, we'll make it easier for you to see things that you have never seen before. And, sometimes, you need a break away from the everyday. So, here we are , at Tanzan Jinja Shrine. About Tanzan Shrine Tanzan Shrine is located in the central part of Nara Prefecture; and, it is one of the most famous shrines for its dazzling autumn foliage and unique pagoda. Tanzan Shrine is located up a mountain and can be reached conveniently by a 25-minute bus ride from Sakurai station. The bus ride from Sakurai station to Danzan Shrine is 490 yen, and there are about 8-9 buses, daily. During the peak foliage season, buses run consecutively to meet demand. Just through the main torii gate, there are about 100 steps leading up to the shrine. The trees hang over the stairs creating a tunnel. The shrine grounds are impressive, and the fall foliage is breathtaking. There is also a, total, of around the shrine, 600 m hike that will surely test your stamina.4 main buildings make up Tanzan. Tanzan was originally a Buddhist temple. However, during the Meiji Period, the government of Japan sought to un-entwine Buddhism from Shintoism, and thus the temple was cast as a shrine. Every building on the ground of the shrine is a landmark. But the most famous landmark of Tanzan Shrine is its 13-storied pagoda. The pagoda dates to 1532 and stands 17 meters tall. It is beautiful in the fall time; and, blends in with matching colored red leaves. At the rear of the temple grounds, you will find a path heading up the mountain. From here, just a short 10-minute hike, you can reach the mountain peak. The peak is only about 600 meters, with a few rest-views along the way. Tanzan Shrine is a great way to experience old Japan and the Shinto architecture, nestled in the mountains. I really enjoyed visiting Tanzan Shrine, and I think anyone who loves shrines, Japanese history, and especially autumn leaves will surely love this unique place. Shot on location.
