GrapheneOS can still install Android apps from the Google Play Store but you need to do this first. ~~~~~ Hi! Video Description ~~~~~~ Yesterday, I showed you how to install Graphene OS on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series hardware, but I understand that many people will not like the idea of using a custom ROM without the Google Play Store. So today, I want to show you a couple of ways you can install those apps. #android #grapheneos The devs behind GrapheneOS are aware that it's difficult for some people to live without the Google Play Store. There are just too many apps out there that are considered must-haves for some of us. So to help out the community, they offer a sandboxed version of the Google Play Store, Google Play Services, and the other app that's required for these to work properly. Sideloading APKs If the app or game you're looking to install is free, then the first thing I recommend is to simply try sideloading the APK for it. There are a number of websites out there that host a mirror for these APK files. APK Mirror is one that I trust, as I know they go out of their way to make sure the APKs are not modified in any way. So you could simply use an app or website like this. Download the APK file And then sideload it like normal. As you can see here, even games that are installed this way can work. They just need to not rely on Google Play Services and they'll run perfectly after you install them. Installing the Google Play Store But not all apps or games are setup in this way. So if it's a premium application or game. . .or if it's one that relies on Google Play Services. Then you can still install it on the GrapheneOS custom ROM But first, you must install the Google Play Store and its dependencies first. This is done by launching the pre-installed App Store that came with GrapheneOS. And you should find Google Play Services in this list. You can see this app has two dependencies, with one of them being the Google Play Store. So we can install this sandboxed version of the Google Play Store, Google Play Services, and GMSCompatConfig by tapping on the install button up here. Again, these are the exact apps you'd be getting from Google, they're just sandboxed so that your usage data and personal information are left separate. Using these apps in this way will share as little information with Google as possible. They will not have extensive permissions granted by the OS, as they have on OEM firmware like One UI and Pixel OS. And GrapheneOS has a compatibility layer within the ROM that helps it to work without these additional permissions. But once installed, you can log into your Google account and install apps or games like you normally would. Conclusion I appreciate the work the developers behind GrapheneOS have done to offer this service. I've tried using custom ROMs without Gapps installed in the past. . .and they can be difficult to use in my normal everyday life. So many of my must-have apps are only functional on Android when they have Google Play Services and the like. Making GrapheneOS a nice compromise between privacy and functionality when it comes to a custom ROM. The lack of permissions these Google apps get, also makes the battery life of this ROM fantastic. Since there are so few apps running in the background and less data being sent up Google servers. If you're looking for a stable and secure custom ROM for your Google Pixel hardware, I definitely recommend giving Graphene OS a try.
