(20 Mar 1995) English/Nat US House of Representatives Minority Leader Richard Gephardt expressed concern Sunday that the two Americans held by Iraq were being used as pawns in a new game to get UN imposed sanctions lifted. Speaking in Washington, Gephardt told journalists that Saddam's ploy would not work, and that efforts were continuing to get the two released. The House Minority Leader was due to discuss Republican welfare reforms, but the continued captivity of two Americans who accidentally strayed into Iraqi territory was on everyone's mind. SOUNDBITE: We are all concerned obviously that they are being used as pawns by Saddam Hussein, but I think the Secretary of Defence is in the area, the President and his people are working on this, if Saddam Hussein has any sense he will let the people out and not hold them as ransom to get rid of the embargo on his country which is not going to be ended. I don't think it's time to talk about hypothetical questions, I just think we ought to firmly and continuously ask that they be let go as soon as possible.
