I broke my Tib/Fib requiring a surgical implant of a Tibial nail and 3 cross supporting pins as a result of a crash during the Loose Screw Rally in September 2023. Even as I sat dejected by the side of the trail as other Loose Screw riders passed, all I could think about was recovering and coming back in 2024. I was so mad at myself for my lack of concentration and poor technique - I was tired, being lazy, and overly focused on my GPS as a somewhat steep descending turn was approaching. I applied far too much rear brake to scrub off speed before the turn and suddenly the bike was sideways and the ground spun my lower leg to the right resulting in the break. I've crashed like this more than once without incident so I thought I would stand up and ride away...but my broken bones had something different to say about that. This past weekend of riding was all about getting my confidence back in advance of the same rally, Loose Screw 2024 this coming September. I'm feeling as good as can be and looking forward to the event in a few short weeks. It's been a journey, and though I truly hope to avoid any repeat incidents, I do also have to acknowledge that the experience has been a bit life re-affirming. I've had so much support from new friends and old, and excellent care starting from the Paramedics all the way through to the hospital, surgery, and post care follow ups. A huge shout out to Dean S who recovered my bike after the accident, packed up all my camping gear and prepared my trailer for friends to pickup. He also guided myself and another friend on this return ride almost one year later. So happy to be back on the trails.
