700,000 Hindu ascetics and sadhus arrived in Delhi in 1966 to protest, seeking a ban on cow-slaughter all over India. When 10,000 of them tried to storm Parliament, they were stopped by armed Police. ll over Delhi the protests turned violent. Purportedly, under orders directly given to the Home Minister by the Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, the police opened fire and sprayed several unarmed civilian crowds with bullets. Thousands were bayoneted and beaten with lathi sticks. The result: 5000 Hindu ascetics and sadhus were killed (Government estimates were 400, but independent sources placed the death toll anywhere between 2000 to 7000). After that several leaders went into indefinite fast until death, and the Government simply set up an eye-wash committee to do nothing. It did not even file a report, and the issue was shrewdly deferred and diffused. However, Swami Karpati Maharaj placed a curse upon Indira Gandhi's head: "You will die in the same way you had innocent sadhus killed."
