I'm always excited to test out a new idea, especially when it gives me an excuse to drive my old Ford 4 x 4. I chose a nearby canyon up in the Unita National Forest. It's a spot that is always nice to visit, especially this time of year. The ice and snow starts melting, creating miniature waterfalls down the rockface along the trail. I got up into the mountains and had so much fun that time got away from me…and darn it, I had to come back again the next day. Which turned out to be a bonus since it snowed 10 inches overnight. It made the drive up that canyon much more better! What’s the big idea? I've been having so much fun with the New Firebox Hex Stove Kit. I’ve used the fire's radiant heat to reverse-sear my steaks since with the new design I’m able to support food off to the side of the fire (thanks to our new locking fire-sticks). Then I thought perhaps our tall windscreen could be used to form a makeshift reflector oven. I set it all up here at the warehouse and found that the grill plate was slightly too wide for the windscreen to fit neatly around it. I had Scott make some alterations to the design so that the two products would work together seamlessly. So, how did it work? I had imagined it working better than it performed. However, it was a very cold and windy day which certainly had a big effect on heat retention. I think next time I will wrap my grill plate in foil to prevent the leading edge of my biscuits from browning too fast. It will be interesting to try this method again on a calm day. And perhaps setting things up a bit differently to optimize the performance potential. I'm looking forward to giving it another shot…see if I can get closer to perfecting this fun new baking technique. Please leave your ideas in the comments on how you think might improve the performance of this minimalist baking method.
