Precision Breast IORT

Precision Breast IORT: An novel form of breast intraoperative radiation pioneered and delivered at UVA. Precision Breast IORT is offered as part of a clinical trial. IRB #18004 The available methods of intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) that are used for the treatment of early-stage breast cancer are limited by the lack of intraoperative imaging and the low radiation dose delivered due to the use of low-energy photons. This video highlights a novel form of breast IORT, Precision Breast IORT, which was developed by a multidisciplinary team at UVA. Precision Breast IORT improves upon existing IORT techniques by offering intraoperative CT scan imaging, a higher radiation dose to at-risk breast tissue and the ability to spare normal tissues from unnecessary radiation. Precision Breast IORT is offered as part of a clinical trial that is now funded by a recent NIH R-01 grant. The research will also compare the post-treatment changes in circulating immune cells in patient treated with Precision Breast IORT in comparison to those treated with conventional whole breast irradiation, thus testing whether Precision Breast IORT provides similar outcomes as whole breast irradiation while avoiding the negative effects of whole breast irradiation on the immune system, the heart and the skin.
