I think many of us, if we're honest, would say we're not really looking forward to Jesus coming back. Sure, we say we are looking for the blessed hope — but life is so good (family, snow, sun, the beach, summer cookouts, Eagles football, books — you name it!). Times when we do look forward to Jesus coming back are usually just when times seem bad (political strife, physical difficulties, an emotional loss, etc.). This tells us something about what we think life in the Kingdom of God will be. We think it will be better than our bad times but just comparable to our good times — in fact, we think it's just sitting around in the clouds, doing nothing or singing songs. Today, I want to challenge that notion. So far in our series, we have interacted with the phrase "kingdom of heaven" twice (3:2; 4:17). This is a proclamation from both John the Baptist and Jesus that God's restored kingdom was available to be received. Those messages did not tell us much about the kingdom, other than it was a related to whatever their audiences already understood about the kingdom. The next section of Scripture we are going into is the famous "Sermon on the Mount." This is the longest collection of Jesus's teachings. It's backdrop is this proclamation of the kingdom being near. So, it's vital for us to understand what the "Kingdom of God" is for us to get a full grasp how this message from Jesus applies to us. When I began research for this sermon about a month ago, I was overwhelmed by the amount of material on this theme. In fact, many say that the kingdom of God is the theme of all of Scripture. So, I decided to try and break down something that's been written about and debated for centuries into something more chewable. That's what we'll prayerfully cover today — a bitesize view of the kingdom of God. So you can follow along, I'll tell you what we're going to do. We're going to do a brief biblical theology of the Sermon on the Mount, asking the question: "what does the Sermon on the Mount tell us about the Kingdom of God?" As we discover information, we will briefly see how further revelation builds on those truths. We're not going straight through, I've put the information together in a logical order, but not really in an outline. We're going to look at 8 loyalty-inducing truths of the Kingdom of God concerning its nature, its timing, and its citizens. Most of them will be about the nature of the kingdom.
