General Lawton Collins was the commander of the VII corps. 4th division, 101st division and the 82nd division. Their job was to secure the terrain inland from Utah beach. The 101st landing just inland of Utah beach and the 82nd farther inland to capture Ste Mere Eglise and bridges on the river Merderet.
