Part one of my 4000 W Electric Skateboard series. A series in which I create a high-power, high-speed electric skateboard, from a high-power 1/5 scale RC car motor, and a very large lithium ion battery. Performance Top speed: 55 Km/h (34 Mph) Power: ~4000 W (5.4 HP) Climbing: The board will climb 30 degree gradients before losing traction. While the board is quite affordable, it does come with some drawbacks, listed below, which became more apparent after extended use: • The battery, while providing excellent range, is physically large, and quite heavy. • Due to the windings of the motor, it requires a lot of phase current to operate, which generates a lot of heat in the VESC, requiring the VESC to be liquid cooled, which while visually interesting, complicates the design. • The use of a boost converter to charge the battery from a 12 V source generates excess heat within the casing, an external charger would have been a better option. • Due to board being one-wheel drive, and very powerful, accelerating and decelerating cause the board to steer quite a bit, making it hard to control.
