(10 Apr 1999) Natural Sound Refugees trapped for weeks in the woods in Kosovo finally arrived in Montenegro on Saturday. The villagers from near Istok in western Kosovo had spent more than two weeks with no food and little shelter in the freezing hills near the Kosovo/Montenegro border. A lull in the shelling allowed them to make the three day trek over the border. The Kosovar villagers had spent more than two weeks hiding in the hills, Yugoslav army shelling preventing them from leaving the area. As the fighting subsided, they were able to make the three day journey by foot to Jablanica, just over the border in Montenegro. But two weeks without food took its toll. This woman, 85 year old Metaj Nole, died from hunger and exhaustion early on Saturday morning. She was buried in a nearby cemetery. Meanwhile the other refugees were taken to Rozaje - where a camp already accommodates 30-thousand refugees. The U-N-H-C-R estimates that about 1-thousand of the refugees who had been sheltering in the woods have now arrived in Jablanica.
