This walking tour was filmed on April 2023, starting at 8 :00 АМ Angkor Thom is a huge ancient temple city and the former capital of the Khmer Empire, located north of the modern city of Siem Reap and the main temple of Cambodia, Angkor Wat. Most of it was built under Jayavarman VII at the turn of the 12th-13th centuries and is a giant fortified city. From the Khmer language, the name of the city is translated as “Great Angkor”. Previously, the city occupied a vast territory and included a large number of temples and other buildings, palaces and houses, and its population was 1 million people. Its most famous attraction is the magnificent Bayon Buddhist Temple, easily recognizable by its large number of towers carved with faces. Previously, another city was located on this site, which was also the capital of the Empire, but it was destroyed during the war with Champa. The former capital was not completely destroyed. Of the religious objects, two temples from previous rulers have survived - Phmeneakas and Bapuon. It so happened that Angkor Thom was abandoned for several centuries, so many of its buildings fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, the city was accidentally discovered by the French naturalist Henri Muo, who rediscovered the Khmer capital for the whole world. Pimeanakas is a three-stage pyramid built by the Khmers at the beginning of the 11th century with four stairs oriented in accordance with the cardinal directions. It is located in the center of Angkor Thom. Interestingly, two of its stairs are decorated with unusual statues of lions. The name Pimenakas is translated from Sanskrit as “the heavenly city of the gods”, and it is located not far from the Bapuon temple, directly opposite the main entrance to the territory of the inner city from the Terrace of the Elephants. Scientists define its purpose as the home temple of the king. Baphuon is one of the oldest temples of Angkor in Cambodia, built in the middle of the 11th century. The temple-mountain symbolized the mythical Mount Meru, surrounded by a barai-ocean, as well as a high sandstone wall. It is from its eastern wall and a beautiful gopura that a long podium bridge leads to the temple-mountain.
