(27 Sep 1995) Spanish/Nat The lawyer of Colombian President Ernesto Samper has been shot and wounded in attack in Bogota - which left two bodyguards dead. . Antonio Jose Cancino was on his way to a local radio station when the gunmen opened fire on his car and another vehicle carrying his bodyguards. Cancino is representing Samper in the inquiry into the alleged financing of his 1994 electoral campaign by the Cali drug cartel. The attack comes a day after President Samper was questioned by the head of the special commission investigating the allegations. The gunmen struck as the two vehicles approached a highway to the east of Bogota. Antonio Jose Cancino was on his way to a local radio station to do an interview - he was travelling with one of his bodyguards followed by a second vehicle carrying two security guards. The fact that it was Cancino at the wheel instead of his bodyguard may have saved his life. Translation: The first thing they did was neutralise the bodyguards, and once they'd done that, a few metres further on they tried to block Dr. Cancino's path to attack him. Maybe they weren't counting on the fact that the person driving the car was Dr. Cancino and not the usual driver and another important element is that one of the bodyguards was actually in the car with Dr. Cancino and he helped fend off the attackers, so this surely saved his life, as Dr. Cancino three himself onto the floor of the car. SUPER CAPTION: General Gilibert - Bogota Police Chief Cancino, seen here arriving at the presidential palace for Tuesday's meeting of the congressional commission investigating President Samper's links with the Cali drug cartel. He is one of the key members of Samper's team of advisers. He is reported not have suffered life-threatening injuries in today's attack. Samper has continuously denied the allegations of Cali drug cartel funding of his 1994 election campaign. But testimony from those within the Cali cartel and within his own election campaign team has been very damaging. Samper's efforts to clear his name suffered a serious blow following the surrender of Guillermo Pallomari to U-S drug agents in Washington two weeks ago. In the latest damning claim, Pallomari, who was financial chief of the Cali cartel, has said it contributed more than 5.5 (m) million dollars to Samper's 1994 election campaign. His statement confirms parts of the testimony given by Santiago Medina, Samper's former campaign treasurer who is in jail on illegal enrichment charges. The President of the House of Representatives Accusation Commission, Heyne Mogollon was at the presidential palace for the interrogation. The commission began its investigation at Samper's request. This is the first time a Colombian president has faced the commission. If the Commission finds sufficient evidence that the cartel financed Samper's campaign, they can recommend impeachment. But Samper was confident the process would clear him despite opposition politicians' accusations that it would be a whitewash.
