Thank you! 🙏 Welcome to the town of Vang Vieng in central Laos – you could say it’s the adventure capital of Laos, with a river flowing through wild karst hill formations, some laid-back countryside and many caves waiting to be explored. Vang Vieng has become a backpackers Mecca whilst in the country with many activities such as tubing and kayaking down the river, zip lining, swimming in the many blue lagoon pools, trekking and rock climbing – there’s a lot to do here but it’s also a place to just chillout and relax. The town lies on the Nam Song River, about 130km north of the capital Vientiane, and was first settled in the mid-14th century as a staging post between the capital and Luang Prabang. Originally named Mouang Song after the body of the deceased King Phra Nha Phao of Phai Naam was seen floating down the river, the town was renamed Vang Vieng during French colonial rule in the 1890s. Significant expansion of the town and its infrastructure occurred during the Vietnam War when the US constructed an air force base and airstrip here called "Lima site 6, which is still visible today right in the middle of town. With the construction of the new Vientiane to Boten railway line and station a few kilometers outside the town, getting here and onward to places in the north of the country such as Luang Prabang and beyond is a lot easier and quicker than when I was last here in 2008!
