What is Rose Powdery Mildew? Powdery mildew, or "the white disease," is a widespread fungus among roses, particularly prevalent during significant temperature differences between day and night. This fungus thrives especially in dry periods that begin with morning dew. In summer, temperatures are generally too high for powdery mildew to develop, which is why it is mostly encountered in spring and autumn when the nights are cooler. Symptoms of Powdery Mildew As its name suggests, rose powdery mildew starts with the appearance of a white, flour-like powder on leaves, stems, and buds. The initial stage includes a slight discoloration on the underside of the leaves, which gradually spreads and affects the entire plant, especially young shoots. Preventing Rose Powdery Mildew The fungus produces spores that can survive winter in the form of mycelium within rose tissues or on debris from previous prunings. To prevent powdery mildew: Avoid watering the foliage in the evening; instead, water in the morning. Do not plant roses in shaded areas. Remove affected parts as soon as symptoms appear. Eliminating Rose Powdery Mildew Spray the leaves preventively with nettle, horsetail, or garlic manure. Cow milk has fungicidal properties. Use semi-skimmed milk diluted at 10% in a liter of rainwater. Apply this treatment in dry weather, either in the morning or evening (never in direct sunlight). Baking soda is popular for various uses. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda per liter of water, adding three teaspoons of olive oil as a wetting agent. Spray the rose once a week.
