Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease: Bill Precht Reef Lecture 2023

Visiting scientist William Precht discussed the topic "Is stony coral tissue loss disease the coup de grace for Caribbean reefs?" Mr. Precht gave a presentation on stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) and its impacts in the Caribbean. First described near Miami, FL in 2014 the disease is still active and spreading throughout the Caribbean. SCTLD is likely the most lethal coral disease ever recorded. The intent of this presentation is to describe this disease using a multi-disciplinary approach. This includes understanding the ecological impacts of SCTLD from in-situ monitoring programs, the potential causes and transmission of this contagion (etiology and epidemiology), pathogenesis and pathobiology of the coral microbiome and surrounding water column associated with this epizootic, and the potential amelioration, intervention, and restoration strategies (including the genetic rescue of various at-risk coral species) that may be effective in conserving Caribbean reefs in the face of this catastrophic disease. About the speaker: William Precht is both a geologist and ecologist by training and has been working on tropical ecosystems since 1978. Since completing his graduate degree from the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Mr. Precht has specialized in the assessment, monitoring, restoration, and rehabilitation of various coastal resources, especially coral reef, seagrass, and mangrove systems. His contributions to the professional and academic ecological sciences community are nationally and internationally recognized, particularly regarding coral reef ecology and paleoecology, historical ecology, and the application of ecological principals to coastal restoration. Bill’s work draws upon significant, state-of-the-art research experience in field studies and theoretical analysis. Since 2012 Mr. Precht has served as the Director of Marine and Coastal Programs with Dial Cordy and Associates, Inc. (DCA) in Miami, FL. Prior to joining DCA he worked for NOAA in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary where he was the Manager and Team Lead of the Damage Assessment, Restoration, and Resource Protection Program. Mr. Precht serves on the Science Advisory Committee of the Coral Restoration Foundation (Key Largo, FL.) and is an Adjunct Faculty in Northeastern University's Three Seas Marine Biology Program where he teaches a course in coral reef ecology every winter quarter. Through this program, Bill has trained many of the world’s premiere coral reef scientists. He also regularly performs research through the Smithsonian Institution’s Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystem Program in both Belize and Panama. In 2006 he completed the first-ever book on coral reef restoration, entitled "Coral Reef Restoration Handbook – The Rehabilitation of an Ecosystem under Siege." Bill has also been featured in two award winning nationally broadcast documentaries on coral reefs and has been interviewed numerous times by NPR on a host of coral reef issues.
