Many people think self-inquiry and presence are the same practice. They’re not. And confusing them is one of the main reasons self-inquiry feels frustrating or ineffective. This video clears that up. Presence is awareness of experience. Self-inquiry is investigation of the experiencer. Presence, popularized by Eckhart Tolle, means being aware of what’s happening right now: thoughts, sensations, sounds, the body. It calms the nervous system, creates space from mental noise, and is powerful in daily life. Self-inquiry, as taught by Ramana Maharshi, moves in a different direction. When a thought arises, you don’t stop at observing it. You ask, “To whom does this thought come?” Then attention turns toward the sense of “I” itself, the one who is aware. You’re not looking for an intellectual answer. You’re tracing attention back to its source. Presence looks at what appears. Self-inquiry looks for who is aware. They overlap, but they’re not interchangeable. Presence refines your relationship with experience. Self-inquiry questions the assumption that there is a separate experiencer at all. Use presence when the mind is busy or reactive. Use self-inquiry when there is enough stillness to investigate the sense of “I” directly.
