This lecture covers Section 11.4: Reactions with Water. We will examine the behavior of Group 2 metals and their oxides in water, focusing specifically on the solubility of the resulting hydroxides. In this video, we will cover: Metals with Water: -Magnesium: Reacts very slowly with cold water but vigorously with steam to form Magnesium Oxide (MgO) and a bright white glow. -Ca, Sr, Ba: React with cold water to form hydroxides and hydrogen gas, with reactivity increasing down the group. Oxides with Water: forming alkaline hydroxide solutions Solubility Trends: The trend in solubility of Group 2 ionic compounds Alkalinity Trend: As solubility increases, more hydroxide ions dissociate, leading to a higher pH (more strongly alkaline) solution as we move from Mg (pH ~10) to Ba (pH ~13-14). This video is designed to align with the Cambridge AICE Chemistry (9701) curriculum and is based on the official course textbook and lecture materials.
