Gomez ordained eight new priests today for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in a Ordination Mass that for the first time ever was held outdoors on the plaza of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, complying with public health guidelines for worship gatherings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In prior years, the Ordination has regularly been held in June and open to the public, family and friends of the new priests, but due to the current crisis, it was pushed back and limited to 100 people, which only included a close circle of family members and friends of the ordinandi. "Your ordination today is historic. My brothers, you are the first priests of the pandemic generation. And you will play an important role in the Church’s healing and rebuilding of our society in the wake of this deadly disease that has swept away so many of our certainties and securities. The Church in this moment is called to go out to the places where people are hurting and suffering, the places that Pope Francis calls the ‘existential peripheries.’” said Archbishop Gomez in his homily.
