Martha and Melissa will give an overview of their work and shared experiences as classroom assistants in an FE setting. They will look at attitudes towards CA support, share their perspectives of supporting ESOL learners in and outside of the classroom, and also share their experiences as lecturers of working with a CA in their own classrooms. They will be asking and answering questions around what assistants do in an ESOL class, the benefits of having support in a class and some of the potential pitfalls. This could be looking at expectations from the teacher and students of the role as well as the expectations of the assistant. What personal qualities and skills have been most helpful as a CA and which ones did/do they need to develop? What strategies do they use in the classroom? What is in their ESOL Literacy toolkit? Melissa has been a classroom assistant with City of Glasgow College since 2008 and an ESOL lecturer since 2010. Before working in FE, she taught English in Ireland and Poland with International House, and was a Better Behaviour Better Learning assistant in a secondary school. Her background is in Slavonic languages and culture, graduating from Glasgow University, and more recently studying linguistics at the Open University. Volunteering for ESOL Forums, she’s worked with asylum seekers and refugees, supporting ESOL learners and teachers in community classes and in their home while completing a PDA in ESOL Literacies. Martha has been a classroom assistant with City of Glasgow College since 2014 and an ESOL lecturer since 2018. Her background is in the creative arts, graduating from Glasgow School of Art, first working with asylum seekers and refugees as a volunteer for Impact Arts, then going on to volunteer as an assistant in community ESOL classes with East Renfrewshire Council and a volunteer tutor for Glasgow ESOL Forum.
