In 1987 I entered into a televised competition called (New faces of 1987) The host of the show was the adorable comedian & actress Marti Caine.. Marit was the anchorwoman for New Faces that was aired on ITV television. Lovely, helpful, Marti Caine was there for all the contestants, whom Marti made feel relaxed and comfortable. I didn't' t win New Faces 1987, but as luck has it, I got seen by Mike Leander & Edward Seago and was asked to auditioned for the musical Matador. The song they asked me to sing was "A Boy From Nowhere which they loved, but due to my lack of experience the role was give to a more experienced actor. Cameron Mackintosh, Producer of the musical, Les Miserables, was auditioning for the role of Jean Valjean in Manchester in 1990 at the free town hall Manchester, one of my favourite towns, which I worked as a soloist and then with my band, the highlander. I decided to go up for this mammoth role, the biggest role in the world, the character Jean Valjean, and after several auditions, I was given the dream star role of Jean Valjean by Sir Cameron Mackintosh himself on the 18th of December 1991. Claude Michel Schönberg Alain Boublil and Herbert Kretzmer, Trevor Nunn, John Caird were present at that last audition, which, I have to say was honour that I made it this far, and humbled by the fact, that they were there to watch someone who had never been to drama school. Nervous and filled with determination and fighting for my life to attain this amazing and wonderful opportunity, I sang with all of my heart and won the day, which lasted till 2004. My heart opened up to the musical theatre industry, but its not an easy life as few people may think. I had ups and downs and beautiful glory days, but what you loose in other ways can be to much.. Thank you to Matt Ryan Trevor Nunn and John Caird and to Ken Caswell who brought out the Valjean in me, Carol Spraggs, David White and many more. Love to you all, Jeff If you like, you can also find me on / realjeffleyton / realjeffleyton / thejeffleytonpage Regards Jeff Leyton.
