Protect your pond from predators. Hi its Lee from the Japanese water gardens. In this video I have a few good tips to help protect your fish from predators. Your fish are a prime target for a number of predators such as Herons and cats, you might be surprised to hear that foxes, minks even grass snakes can also be a problem. Left unprotected it will not be long before the worst happens and your valuable fish get badly injured end up being a quick snack for a most unwanted guest. Valuable Koi are also desirable to thieves. So what can you do? My first suggestion is to build your pond with up out the ground or surround it by a fence or wall. If the predator can just waltz up to the side of the pond and help themselves your laying a table for a banquet. Cats and Herons will struggle to reach down more than six inches or so. Herons are wading birds and prefer to walk into the shallows not dive straight in. Building your pond close to your property will help. Most predators will be reluctant to visit when there is activity and you can keep a closer watch on the pond. A security camera and recording system might be enough to deter a thief and if fish are going missing you will be able to look back on the recording and see how the predator is getting in. A canopy over the pond will help too. They stop leaves, provide addition warmth and shade for the fish. They don’t suite every situation but if done tastefully they can complement your pond. The next best thing to canopy is a net. Good fitting nets will stop all but the most determined Heron but they look very unsightly and will restrict your daily access to the pond and fish. Sometimes fish snag fins on netting and can end up floundering helplessly on top of the net if they find a gap so be aware. Fake plastic Herons are cheap to buy and are sometimes effective. I recommend that they are positioned alongside the pond, in full view and are moved on a regular basis. Herons are not stupid and they will eventually realize that something is a miss if you don’t. . Electronic sensing devices are available. Some connect to a garden hose and set off a jet of water that scares off the predator. Others make noises or sudden movements and so on. You can even electric fence kits But my experience of this type of thing is that they are usually a gimmick and the build quality is so poor that they quickly break. Sometimes you need to apply multiple strategies and there is no fool proof system. Good luck and happy pond keeping.
