June 2020 | Los Angeles, CA Los Angeles County endured several nights of looting and arson in late May/early June, following the international internet release of video documenting the Minneapolis murder of George Floyd while in police custody on May 25, 2020. Immediate angry but primarily peaceful protests ensued around the world and throughout the U.S., demanding justice, racial reconciliation, and ultimately, genuine peace. Apparently organized looters and arsonists - entirely apart from the protesters - quickly rallied with crowbars and hammers, taking advantage of the widespread public protests to overwhelm isolated Los Angeles County business districts in riotous destruction and theft. Local law enforcement was immediately outnumbered as the enterprising robbers cleaned out store after store - some later adding arson to the confusion as well. In Los Angeles and Orange Counties, protesters including Black Lives Matter (BLM) dominated the streets at the top of their lungs, demanding justice and police policy reforms, grieving the unnecessary deaths that have not diminished. They shouted their rage; they did not loot nor burn. They continue to demand change. L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti initially called for curfews to regain the peace, but it was soon evident that the California National Guard (CalGuard) riot-control intervention was needed to help thwart the criminally enterprising looters. In the aftermath, there were many questions left unanswered: who started the fires in the public wastebaskets along the promenades? Who left the piles of stones on the sidewalks? Who smashed store windows with hammers and crowbars - then calmly silently melted away from the surging looters flooding into defenseless retail areas, pillaging store after store unconscionably? Janice Hahn, Los Angeles County Supervisor, summed up the situation eloquently, "We must stand in solidarity against the deaths of unarmed black men at the hands of law enforcement, but please don't destroy our Los Angeles. This is not a protest anymore."
