It was serialized in "Weekly Asahi" from January to July 1963, and published by Shinchosha Pocket Library in August 1963. It depicts the friendship between two young men who work at a paper-hanging shop in the downtown area of Edo. It is currently included in the Shincho Bunko series and has become a long-selling novel. The total number of copies of the Shincho Bunko edition has exceeded one million. It has been adapted into a stage play and performed at Zenshinza and Shochiku stages. It has also been made into a movie and a TV drama. [Synopsis] When Eiji sees Sabu crying in the rain in Ryogoku, a downtown area of Edo, he comforts her. The two work at the sutra-writing shop Hokodo. However, Eiji is falsely accused of a crime and loses faith in people, and he finds himself struggling with hardships and trials at a labor camp. (From Wikipedia) Yamamoto Shugoro (June 22, 1903 - February 14, 1967) was a Japanese novelist. His real name was Shimizu Satomu. He was born in Yamanashi Prefecture. After graduating from Nishimae Elementary School in Yokohama, he lived as an apprentice at Yamamoto Shugoro Shoten in Kobikicho, Tokyo. In 1926, his work "Sumadera Fukinai" was published in Bungeishunju, marking his literary breakthrough. His novel "Nihon Fujidoki" was nominated for the Naoki Prize in the first half of 1943, but he firmly declined the award. Since then, he has written many popular novels, such as "Yanagibashi Monogatari," "Sleepy Chief," "Eiga Monogatari," "The Fir Tree Remains," "Red Beard's Medical Treatment Story," "Five-petal Camellia," "Aobeka Monogatari," "Void Travels," "A Town Without Seasons," "Sabu," and "Long Hill." He is known for his many masterpieces and popular novels that depict the suffering of samurai and the sadness of ordinary people from the perspective of ordinary people, and was highly praised, especially in his later years.
