Once you or your baby have decided it's time to wean, the key is to do it slowly, and eliminate a feeding about every 2 to 5 days, shorten the length of feedings, and increase the amount of time in between feedings. In order to get your baby to take a bottle, there are a few tips and tricks you can try. First of all, start eliminating the feeding that's in the middle of the day or any feeding that your baby isn't necessarily hooked onto. The night-time feeding would not be a good one to start with, because a lot of babies look to that one for comfort. If you're having a hard time getting your baby to take the bottle yourself, oftentimes it takes dad or someone else to introduce the bottle to the baby. Sometimes mom can't even be in the room, because then they'll see you and want to nurse. Go into another room, and if you're the only one around to try to feed the baby, you can try holding your baby, cradling her as if you were going to nurse her, and then just stick the bottle in her mouth. It's also best if you can pump and put breast milk in the bottle, because at least that's a taste that she's accustomed to. Slowly you can start mixing breast milk with formula, maybe half and half, until she becomes totally accustomed to the taste of formula, and you don't need to give her breast milk anymore, and she's drinking formula from a bottle. It's really important, as I mentioned earlier, to eliminate feedings slowly and not stop "cold turkey". This will be easier on your body and help prevent engorgement and infections, such as mastitis, which are caused by clogged milk ducts. If you have any other specific questions about weaning, contact a lactation specialist, or feel free to ask any other questions you have on our Facebook page, and recommend us to your friends and family too. Good luck.
