Many Muslims, when they hear the words mental health or mental illness, dismiss it completely as if it doesn’t exist. Some may attribute it only to Shaytan, jinn, possession, or the evil eye. Others claim it’s a sign of weak faith, lack of religious practice, or even a punishment from Allah. But the big question is: does Islam recognize mental health and mental illness? Is it simply a Western idea to pull people away from religion, or has it been part of Islamic knowledge since the beginning? The truth is, mental health is not new in Islam. Scholars like Imam Razi and Ibn Sina wrote extensively on the topic centuries ago. Imam Razi even established one of the first psychiatric wards in Baghdad just decades after the Prophet ﷺ. Ibn Sina documented criteria to diagnose and treat severe mental illness, showing that Muslims were pioneers in understanding the human mind. This proves that Islam has always acknowledged mental health as real and important. The Qur’an itself mentions human struggles with anxiety, depression, fear, and stress. Allah describes chest constriction, emotional pain, and worry as real experiences—even felt by the Prophet ﷺ. These are not signs of weak faith but part of the human condition. Allah reminds us that in Paradise, He will remove all negative feelings from our chests, freeing us from hurt, jealousy, and sorrow. Islam teaches us that mental well-being matters, and acknowledging these struggles brings us closer to healing, compassion, and understanding. #Islam #MentalHealth #Depression #Anxiety #Quran #ProphetMuhammad #IslamicPerspective #HealingInIslam #FaithAndWellbeing #MuslimCommunity
