First Aid Skills. How to dress nose wounds (e.g. a laceration to the bridge of the nose).

This re-enacted training video shows how a first aider may apply a dressing to a nose wound. Wounds to the bridge of the nose can be problematic but happen frequently when people wearing specs have a fall, and the frame of the specs badly lacerates the skin. Direct pressure will help stop the bleeding, but before we go off to the Minor Injuries Unit, we want to put a dressing on there to protect the area and reduce the chances of infection. Lacerations to the nose can be very messy. We want the best care possible so that the wound heals neatly and minimises scarring, that's why this and other facial wounds should be re-assessed and treated by a health care professional. If you are treating somebody other than yourself, you'll need to:- Sit the person down. Ask how it happened. Look for signs of confusion. Gain consent. Put on gloves. Clean the wound (if you have consent and you think you can do so without causing further damage, or poking the person in the eye!) Now for the dressing. You're best using the small 'eye-patch' dressing. Cut off the bandage sections so now you just have a small flexible pad, and tape this over the wound. Once the dressing is in place, arrange for the patient to go to a Minor Injuries Unit. If this is a work place accident, remember to fill in an accident report.
