To begin click “set up and start the USB data logger.” You are presented with a number of options. First, you can give each data logger a unique name- this will help you identify individual loggers quickly. Next, you can choose the mode of operation. The logger has four different modes of operation. These are: The Event Mode is for recording either the rising OR falling edges of an input signal but not both. The PC software refers to this as “Record events.”The maximum input rate is 4 events per second.For example this could be people passing through a gate. The logger will record every time the gate is opened. In this mode it will not record the time that the gate closes again. If you also want the time the gate closes you should consider using state mode instead. The State Mode is for recording both the rising AND falling edges of an input signal. The PC software refers to this as “Record state changes.” The maximum input rate is 4 state changes per second. For example this could be monitoring how long a pump or other equipment is switched on or off. The logger will record when the pump is switched on and for how long. The Count Mode is for recording the total number of rising OR falling events during a logging session. The PC software refers to this as “Count events.”For example this could be for counting how many times a switch has been pressed. The logged output will be a single value that represents the total number of switch presses. Using this mode will not tell you at what times the switch was pressed. If you want that information you should consider using either the event or state modes instead. The Count Per Mode is for recording the number of events occurring within a specified periodic time interval. This mode is activated by selecting “Count events” mode and then ticking the “Enable counts per time period” checkbox in the following setup screens. You will also need to enter the required time period. For example this could be used for counting how many cars go past a sensor in a specified time window. The output from the logger will be a histogram where each bar represents the count for that time interval. This would give you an idea about how busy a road is at different times of day if an hourly interval was used. Once this is complete click next. Next, you can select the types of input signal. How you set this page up will depend on your application. Finally, you can decide if you want the Flash red LED event on or off. The logger has a red LED that can be enabled or disabled. The requirement for this will depend on your application. Once this is complete click next. If you selected voltage triggering the following page lets you select the input range that suits the application. Note the trigger voltages are the respective levels that must be met for the logger to consider a voltage high or low. Once that is complete click next The following page is the count per mode setup. As I have mentioned earlier, tick the “Enable counts per time period” checkbox and select the required time period.Once this complete click next. Finally you can set up when you would like the data logger to start. You can start with an immediate start, or select delay the start of the data logger, which allows you to put a set time and date that you want the data logger to begin recording. We recommend using the logger in this mode to ensure that you do not record any erroneous events as the logger is disconnected from the USB port following setup. Once that is complete click Finish. Simply click okay to exit. Now you can take the data logger out of the USB port and place it in a desired location as it is ready to start taking data.
