Topic: DOL Starter Control Diagram A Direct-On-Line (DOL) Starter is one of the simplest and most commonly used methods to start a three-phase induction motor. It connects the motor directly to the full line voltage, allowing it to start and run at its rated speed immediately. The DOL starter provides both motor control and protection features. 1. Components of a DOL Starter A typical DOL starter circuit includes: MCB or Fuse – Protects the circuit from overcurrent. Contactor – Electrically controlled switch used to start/stop the motor. Overload Relay – Protects the motor from overcurrent or overheating. Start Push Button (NO) – Normally open switch used to energize the contactor. Stop Push Button (NC) – Normally closed switch used to de-energize the contactor. 3-Phase Motor – The load being controlled. 2. Working of the DOL Starter Control Circuit Control Circuit Operation: When the Start button is pressed, the control circuit energizes the contactor coil. This closes the contactor’s main contacts, supplying full line voltage to the motor. At the same time, an auxiliary contact (NO) of the contactor closes in parallel with the Start button to create a holding circuit. This keeps the motor running even after the Start button is released. If the Stop button is pressed or if the overload relay trips, the control circuit opens, de-energizing the contactor coil and stopping the motor. 3. Power Circuit vs. Control Circuit Power Circuit: Handles the high current going to the motor through the contactor and overload relay. Control Circuit: Operates at a lower voltage (often 24V, 110V, or 230V AC) and manages the start/stop operation using push buttons, relays, and auxiliary contacts. 4. Advantages of DOL Starter Simple to design and maintain. Inexpensive and easy to operate. Provides full torque at startup. 5. Limitations of DOL Starter High inrush current (6 to 8 times the rated current) which can stress the motor and power system. Not suitable for large motors due to voltage dips and mechanical stress. No speed control – runs the motor at full speed only. 6. Application Areas Small industrial motors. Pumps, compressors, conveyor belts. Fans and other simple mechanical loads.
