The teens in Teenage Turmoil Volume 9 are no slackers. They want to be well-adjusted human beings, have good jobs, and be safe, courteous drivers. Fortunately, we see how they achieve all this and still look sharp while doing it! I KNOW WHERE I AM GOING: Dave and Lucky have just graduated from high school but have chosen different paths to adulthood: Dave joins the Army (yay!) while Lucky pounds the pavement looking for a job (boo!) By the time Dave gets out of the military, he can write his own ticket to success and get to know all the influential movers and shakers in the Army Reserves! Poor Lucky, however, is resigned to pumping gas and scooping ice cream, until he enlists too! PLANNING YOUR CAREER (1953): With over 25,000 careers in the world to choose from, young Bob is overwhelmed. How does one make such an important life decision? By taking aptitude tests at school, that’s how! Sure enough, Bob is directed into a career as an industrial designer or an architect. Hooray! Another youth saved from a frivolous career in the arts! EMOTIONAL HEALTH (1952): A doctor examines a young man who’s been having panic attacks and suggests that he go to a psychiatrist: “Gee Doc, I'm not crazy!” Nevertheless, the doctor tries to convince the boy that emotional upsets are as normal as the common cold – and shows him funny cartoons to prove it! The kid eventually goes to a shrink who discovers that the young man has come to hate his uber-critical father and is way too attached to his mother. Case closed! Once again, it’s all the fault of the parents! INTRODUCING THE DRIVOTRAINER (1953): Wowie wow-wow! Watch teenagers learn to drive in the “most modern advanced training facility” of its time – The Drivotrainer! In a room full of phony cars (complete with all the modern conveniences of the latest Fifties automobiles), kids rack up the miles under simulated driving conditions. A giant contraption with a film projector and a recorder scores their driving and makes being behind the wheel a life-like experience without the pesky traffic and all those annoying pedestrians! HOW DO YOU KNOW IT'S LOVE? (1950): Hell if we know! After Jack professes his undying love for Nora – a girl he’s been dating for only two months – Nora feels compelled to ask Mom about the different types of love. Mom promptly stresses the importance of having a “mature” love before committing to a boy. Sure enough, Jack and Nora go on a double date with Jack’s older brother and his long-time girlfriend and, after watching the two lovebirds in action, Nora realizes that she’d rather just go roller skating with Jack than be his main squeeze. We heartily agree. THE COOL HOT ROD (1952): Sid Davis delivers the goods in this terrific cautionary tale espousing the dangers of unsupervised hot rodding. A new kid in town with a fast set of wheels causes a stir by blowing through town in his sweet ride. But – oops! – the citizens of the town are dead set against hot rodding since one of their own was killed racing across the choo-choo tracks! So the cool cats and kittens of The Knights Car Club teach the new guy all about racing cars on a designated drag strip and how hot-rodding can be a fun, well-organized hobby for safe and courteous drivers. Go, daddy, go!
