HealthManagement News - May 4 2021 (0:04) This International Labour Day on May 1st was marked by protests and marches by people demanding more labour protection amid the pandemic as it continues to turn economies and workplaces upside down. There were also calls for lower rents, higher wages and other similar issues. Protests occurred in Turkey, France, the Philippines, Germany, Bosnia, Indonesia and Italy. (0:32) Violence against healthcare workers continues to be a growing problem. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, incidents of serious workplace violence from 2002 to 2012 were four times more common in healthcare than in private industry. The most common healthcare workplace that is a victim of violence is the emergency room. (0:58) Surgeons may have already used robots to perform surgical procedures. However, in a new paper, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, show that robots can be trained to move entirely on their own through the use of artificial intelligence. An automated robot can match or even exceed a human in dexterity, precision and speed. While these methods are still not available for everyday use, progress is certainly accelerating. (1:27) The Food and Drug Administration will soon ban all flavoured cigars and menthol cigarettes. The ban comes eight years after a citizen petition calling for such a move. Public health groups have opposed the sale of menthol cigarettes for years because flavoured cigarettes make them more palatable and appealing. --- HealthManagement.org is a dedicated healthcare portal promoting management, leadership, cross-collaboration and winning practices in healthcare.
