An important mission for Newlab at Michigan Central Is working with civic organizations and community leaders to help create sustainable, equitable access to mobility-focused technology in underserved neighborhoods. Here in Detroit, Chening Duker, founder of the farm delivery startup Pluck.eco, has teamed up with fellow Newlab startup BILITI Electric to create the Veggie Express, an urban delivery EV tuk tuk revolutionizing fresh food access from local farms to community sites in Detroit. The novel three-wheeled EV will be stocked with fresh produce and foods before it arrives at Corktown neighborhood locations, where Newlab at Michigan Central is based, to host a mobile grocery store for residents. The first official Veggie Express mobile market day pilot kicked off at Detroit’s Clement Kern Gardens apartments last week, welcoming local households to shop for fresh foods off the vehicle. The startup team is running a parallel pilot in collaboration with Eastern Market Partnership, Oakland Ave. Farmers Market, and Detroit Black Farmer Land Fund farms to test a new business model of transporting locally grown produce to market using an on-demand produce pick-up service. Special thanks to The Community Builders, Inc., Clement Kern Gardens, Office of Mobility Innovation at The City of Detroit, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan and our farm partners for making this pilot a reality. We hope this is the first a step on the path to bringing more healthy, fresh foods to Detroiters.
