Obviously, the ITV documentary was great in its entirety. To echo the famous curate, parts of the BBC. documentary were excellent too. i did sense a missed opportunity, and I will come to it as quickly as possible. What I found most important in the ITV documentary was Neena Modi's frank analysis of the cause of the spike in deaths and collapses at the Countess of Chester. She didn't say which babies she particularly had in mind, but I think the clearest candidates are the twins and multiples. Some of the mothers of those babies were having ante-natal care at Liverpool Women's Hospital, and consultants at CoCH and LWH were in close contact. About the BBC documentary, I was most struck by the amateurish discussion of the statistical issue of the 1% and the 40% extubation rates. This was a shocking example of what happens when amateurs start talking about statistics. If your average ICU baby experiences one tube dislodgement per 100 shifts, how many dislodgements would you expect in total on a big ward per 100 shifts? The BBC had got some graphic artist to illustrate exactly this difference, so someone on the team must have understood the issue, but I'm afraid that Judith, Jonathan, and the "expert" they were talking to seem to have completely missed the point, even though it has been talked about on internet fora by intelligent people ever since those numbers were first mentioned by the police. I emailed Jonathan Coffey about this, but his reaction was to block further emails from me. Oh well. I wrote to Cheshire Constabulary offering my statistical expertise pro bono, but as usual I got no answer.
