The 2024 BMW X1 proves big things can come in small packages. Despite being BMW's smallest SUV offering in the US, the X1 packs a serious punch with an available 312-horsepower turbocharged engine in the new M35i model. We recently had the chance to get behind the wheel, and the X1 impressed on many fronts. Let's start with the design. The X1 wears BMW's latest styling language well, with clean, sculpted lines and just the right amount of aggression. The M35i's sporty body kit with larger air intakes and quad exhaust tips gives it an attractive dose of attitude. Inside, buyers are treated to a premium cabin with high-quality materials and the latest tech like BMW's Curved Display integrating the digital instrument cluster and infotainment screens. The base X1 xDrive28i comes with a 2.0-liter turbo-four making 241 hp, providing decent acceleration. But the M35i is where it's at for enthusiasts. Its version of the 2.0-liter turbo pumps out 312 hp, allowing a 0-60 mph sprint of just 4.7 seconds according to BMW. The engine pulls strongly once you get past some initial turbo lag. More impressive than the straight-line speed is the X1's handling composure. Both models receive an athletic suspension tune, with the M35i getting an adaptive setup as standard. Body motions are well controlled, and the X1 loves to carve corners with minimal body roll. The steering could use a tad more feedback, but overall, the X1 delivers a remarkably fun driving experience for a small crossover. Packaging is smart, too, with plenty of passenger room despite the X1's compact footprint. Adults can sit comfortably in the back, and there's a decent 26 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. Just don't expect a third row – this Bimmer comes solely in a two-row configuration. Minor gripes? We noticed some cabin creaks and rattles, the engine can sound gruff at times, and the stiff M35i suspension can deliver some jolts over rough surfaces. But overall, the 2024 BMW X1 delights with its upscale ambiance, enjoyable driving dynamics, and abundance of features for the price.
