Reviewing the original Gladiator before tackling its sequel. There are some serious problems with that narrative, but this came out 25 years ago, when I was still in middle school. Its inaccuracies have shaped my perception of the Roman Empire. Yet, as a historian, I can’t simply overlook them. But there’s also the fact that there is so much distance. What purpose do these inaccuracies serve and how do they distort our understanding of history? That is the question of this review.
