Cyclotron Cyclotron is a device used to accelerate heavy charged particles or ions to high energies by the combined action of alternating electric field and perpendicular magnetic field. Construction Cyclotron consists of a pair of hollow D shaped metallic chambers called Dees [D1 and D2]. They are placed in an evacuated chamber with their diametric edges parallel with a small gap between them. Both the Dees are placed under the pole pieces of a powerful electromagnet, so that the magnetic field is perpendicular to the plane of the Dees. A high frequency alternating voltage is applied between the Dees such that the electric field exists only in the space between the Dees. A source of ion P is placed at the centre of the gap between the Dees. Working When the applied frequency of AC is equal to the cyclotron frequency of the charged particle [𝜈_𝑐=𝑞𝐵/2𝜋𝑚] , the particle is accelerated continuously at each time it crosses the gap between the Dees. Inside the Dees the particle executes semi circular motion due to the perpendicular magnetic field present. So, the particle describes a spiral path of increasing radius and finally comes out with high velocity.
