After years of planning, design and construction, the McMaster House in Mitcham, Melbourne is finally complete. In this Completion Series, we walk through the home space by space, exploring the materials, architectural decisions and design thinking that shaped the project. The entry and staircase are often overlooked in residential design treated simply as circulation spaces. But in this home they became one of the most important architectural moments in the house. Rather than revealing everything at once, the entry sequence was carefully designed to slow the arrival into the home, allowing the architecture, materials and light to unfold as you move through the space. Natural light filters down through the stair void, materials transition from exterior to interior, and subtle lighting helps shape the experience of moving through the home. In this episode we explore: • The architectural intent behind the stair void • How natural light shapes the entry sequence • Lighting strategies used to elevate circulation spaces • Material transitions from outside to inside • Design details that elevate everyday movement through the home This series documents the design thinking behind our Grand Designs Transformations project, exploring the materials, collaborators and design decisions that brought the house together. ⸻ Project Information Project: McMaster House Location: Mitcham, Melbourne Featured on Grand Designs Transformations Design: Heartly Design Studio Lighting: EST Lighting Electrical & Automation: Pryor Connections ⸻ Follow the journey Instagram / pryorstate Subscribe to follow the full Beyond the Materials and McMaster House Completion Series.
