The National Youth Service Corporation (NYSC) was created in 1973 in a bid to reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war. NYSC is mandatory for all graduates and is a requirement to secure employment in a Nigerian company. During their year long service the graduates commonly referred to as 'Youth Corpers' are paid a monthly wage of N19,800 ($62) which is too little to survive in the present economy. "The allowance is not sufficient at all," laments one guy BattaBox presenter BollyLomo asks some Youth Corpers in Lagos if NYSC has changed their lives. Some of their responses were quite revealing as they poured out their frustrations with the programme. "Sometimes they ask us to pick litter in the office," replies one lady Lots of youths currently serving the country believe the programme is irrelevant and too stressful and should therefore be scrapped... "It makes you redundant, nothing much to do," recounts one lady "It should be made optional, not mandatory," says another Some had a lot of good things to say about their service year and how the programme has changed their lives.
