Host: Joanna Coles, Warren County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources Guest: Dr. Andy Bailey, UK Extension Tobacco Specialist Topic: Tobacco in Kentucky Kentucky still leads the U.S. in the production of burley tobacco, dark fire-cured tobacco, and dark air-cured tobacco. Burley tobacco is grown in central and western Kentucky, while dark tobacco types are grown in 8 counties in western Kentucky and 6 counties along the border in northwest Tennessee. Burley tobacco is blended with flue-cured tobacco grown in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia to produce ‘American Blend’ cigarettes. Dark fire-cured and dark air-cured tobaccos are used primarily in the production of moist snuff, along with small niche markets for cigar wrappers. Tobacco production in Kentucky has dropped by 50 to 60% since the ending of the Federal Tobacco Program (Tobacco Buyout) in 2005. Burley tobacco production has steadily declined as smoking rates have declined in the U.S. Declines in dark tobacco production did not occur until 2018 following the release of nicotine pouches that only contain nicotine and no tobacco. The number of tobacco growers and farms growing tobacco in Kentucky has declined by nearly 97% since before the Tobacco Buyout, from around 25,000 tobacco farms in 2000 to around 800 tobacco farms in Kentucky today.
