Since 1840, the South Manitou Island Lighthouse has helped to guide ships through the Manitou Passage. Includes 4K drone video of Lighthouse, Tower, surrounding landscape, Harbor, and a "secret" passageway! The South Manitou Island Lighthouse is located in Lake Michigan about six miles north and west of famous Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan. Correction: In the last number of years, the Francisco Morazan shipwreck has become almost completely submerged and is barely visible. Note: During the 1830s, the land on the Michigan coast adjacent to South Manitou Island was very sparsely populated. But on South Manitou for a period, as shown in the video, there were railroad tracks going from the interior of the island out to Burton's Wharf. South Manitou was a vital Great Lakes refueling stop - in the form of wood for steam engines - for thousands of passing steamships traveling back and forth from Chicago to Buffalo. The harbor was bustling through the 1840s. Features similarities and connections to the Old Presque Isle Light, the Grand Traverse Light, the Point Betsie Light, and the Lightship Huron!
