In summer 2024, the Sand Stone Fire burned over 27,000 acres in central Arizona, including the Sycamore Creek NEON field site. This video explores how invasive grasses can fuel hotter, more frequent desert fires—and why continuous ecological monitoring is critical to understanding ecosystem change. NEON operates 81 field sites across the U.S., collecting standardized data to track how ecosystems respond to fire, flood, and storm. At Sycamore Creek NEON (SYCA), scientists are studying how rainfall will alter stream chemistry, sediment flows, and aquatic communities in the fire's aftermath. Every day without data is a missed opportunity—which is why NEON was built to be nimble and resilient. 🔗 Learn more about NEON: https://www.neonscience.org/ 🔗 Sycamore Creek NEON Field Site: https://www.neonscience.org/field-sit... #Wildfire #EcologicalResearch #SonoranDesert #NEON #InvasiveSpecies #EcosystemScience #EnvironmentalMonitoring #Ecology Suggested citation for this video: National Ecological Observatory Network.
