The Barker Family bought Larnach Castle in 1967. Here the family celebrate their 40th year and Margaret Barker’s 65th birthday. Sophie Barker shares some ghost stories and growing up in NZ’s only Castle. Dunedin, New Zealand, is home to Larnach Castle. Built in 1871 by William Larnach, it took 200 men three years to build the outside and a further 12 years was spent embellishing the interior with master craftsmanship. The cost was a reputed £125,000, a huge fortune in those days. Visitors can see lavish interiors with Italian plaster ceilings, English carving using local New Zealand and imported woods, plus a one tonne marble bath and the Southern Hemisphere’s only Georgian Hanging Staircase. While Mr Larnach started off what looked to be a dynasty the castle had a scandalous and tragic history. Larnach had three wives and six children with a demanding business and political career. Eventually this ended in a scandalous suicide in Parliament buildings in 1898. The Barker Family bought the castle in 1967, restoring it to its former glory. Sophie, Margaret and Norcombe Barker all feature in the video welcoming visitors to the castle. Larnach Castle is the icon of Dunedin, the Heritage Capital of New Zealand. The castle is a must visit and a true treasure trove of NZ antiques, craftmanship and spectacular views. The Garden of International Significance is the creation of Margaret Barker and is a testament to her vision and plant expertise. Make sure you go visit sometime soon!
