Security guards STORYLINE Hundreds of Muslims protesters rallied in the capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir on Friday to condemn the Pope's recent remarks on Islam and to demand he withdraw his statement. Led by the chief cleric of the Jamia mosque, the main mosque in Srinagar, hundreds of protestors walked in a procession after Friday prayers. "We strongly condemn whatever the Pope has said. He has apologised, but we demand that he should take back whatever he said in his statement," senior cleric Ahmad Syed Nakshabandi said. Some protesters were seen chanting slogans like "Hang the Pope!" Others later pelted the police with stones but were chased away. In a September 12 address in Germany, Pope Benedict cited the words of a Byzantine emperor who characterised some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as "evil and inhuman," particularly "his command to spread by the sword the faith." On Sunday, Benedict said he was "deeply sorry" about the reaction to his remarks, stressing that they did not reflect his own opinions. Some Muslim leaders accepted his regrets, although others demanded an unequivocal apology. Jammu-Kashmir state, the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir, is the only Muslim majority state in a predominantly Hindu India. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and claimed by both in its entirety.
