It almost doesn't get any more historic than this! The castle is one of the oldest and most important hilltop castles in Switzerland. Although the castle has been repeatedly upgraded militarily and was even rebuilt with artillery reinforcements from 1625 onwards, it has never been exposed to serious battles as far as we know, only an attempted looting by the Gulgers in 1375 has been handed down. A legend tells that a dragon once lived in a cave on the mountain. It was defeated by the two knights Wolfram and Guntram. In gratitude, the two were named Counts of Lenzburg and were let build a castle on the molasse round hill. However, the region and also the elevation were already settled in the Neolithic Age, an exact dating is not possible until today. Built around the year 1000 A.D. by the Count of Lenzburg, it belonged to the German Emperor Barbarossa (Frederick I) from 1173 on, since the last Count of Lenzburg had no descendants, but he was friends with the Emperor and they had even fought together in the 2nd Crusade. The emperor was a descendant of the Staufer family. Later the castle belonged to the Counts of Kyburg, the Counts of Habsburg, the city of Bern, the Wedekind family, the polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth and today it is a foundation. From the Swiss point of view, the most famous inhabitant was probably a bailiff from Bern - Adrian I von Bubenberg, later Schultheiss of Bern and hero of the Battle of Murten. The Amundsen Room also dates back to the period from 1925 to 1928, as the two explorers Licoln Ellsworth and Roald Amundsen planned some of their expeditions here in this castle. Everyone undertook the first flight expedition to the Arctic in 1925 with 2 Dornier whale flying boats. Amundsen is considered the 1st man to reach the geographic South Pole and possibly the 1st man to reach the geographic North Pole, but here the history books are not in complete agreement. In addition, he was the first to cross the Northwest Passage between 1903 and 1906. Lincoln also achieved fame as a polar explorer and aviator. He flew over the North Pole several times, was a navigation expert aboard the Graf Zeppelin, and was a supporter of the 1931 attempt to reach the North Pole through the ice with the submarine Nautilus. He then turned his attention to Antarctica and completed 4 expeditions. Thank you for watching our video. We appreciate a comment or a like.
