On the 22nd and 24 Feb 2021, my daughter Georgia and our dog Maggie the Border Terrier set out to hunt for the crash site of a World War 2 Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft on the south east hillside of Loch Doon which is nestled in the Galloway Forest Park, South Ayrshire, Scotland. Day 1, the weather was gorgeous, the scenery was epic. The problem was I was off a run of night shifts so we started pretty late in the day. i had the co-ordinates of the crash site but foolishly forgot I would lose my cellular data connection for referencing the instructions off a Walking page on Facebook. I made a wrong turn and we wasted an hour fighting through tough, boggy terrain and the woods the wreckage was lying in had been cleared, throwing me off again. Day 2 On my own this time with some revised instructions of how to find it. I hope you enjoy it. The Hawker Hurricane was part of 439Squadron and was a Mk IV, tail number LD564. It was flown by F/O Roswell Murray MacTavish of the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was based at RAF Heathfield in the town of Ayr near where I live. On a training mission he was last observed by his wingman diving out of the clouds and he lost site of him. His wreckage was later discovered and his remains were buried in Ayr Cemetery. In 2024, it will mark the 80th year since this tragic event and I would love it if a fly past could be organised in his memory.
