Atlin Gold Rush, Pine City BC - Prospecting For Gold Nuggets On Pine Creek & A Surprise Gold Rush

Far up in northwestern BC near the border with the Yukon is the town of Atlin. An old gold mining town from the gold rush days, the town was once a city of 10,000 and was a huge part of culture in the mining camps of the north. Today, it is a small community of less than 500 hundred surrounded by remote wilderness. The gold rush took place in the Pine Creek Valley and had many placer gold creeks that were patrolled by prospectors and miners. Gold creeks in the Atlin District produced huge quantities of coarse gold and some of the biggest nuggets ever found in BC. There was a lot of confusion at the time due to the border with BC and Northwest Territories regarding mining laws, which made for some interesting times. We travel to the town of Atlin to explore the legacy of this incredible mining town far off the beaten path. It is an isolated place with only one road leading to the community. There is no road access from the rest of BC, and going up through the Yukon is the only way to get there. Sometimes referred to as "Switzerland of the North," it does not disappoint.
