VURIA HILL.The Hidden Gem in Taita Taveta County.Highest point in the Coast Region.

‪@thegabrieltvkenya‬ Standing at 2,228 Metres above sea level makes Vuria of the Taita Hills the highest Peak of the Eastern Arch of Mountain Range in Coast Region. It's believed to have been formed more than 100 Million Years ago and at around 30 Million Years ago the entire area was covered by extensive Rainforest. There's alot to write about the Vuria Hill and I choose to narrow down to specific elements that truly are of great benefit to entire community. First the ecology of the place is full of unique Flora and Fauna with more than 20 Endemic species, African Violets plants, Endemic bird species of Taita Apalis and Taita thrush not forgetting Taita Falcon and Taita Fiscal that were first discovered in Taita Hills before other areas hence their name. They prefer closed unfragmented woodlands and Vuria being one of the gazetted forest in Taita one is sure of having a sight of them upon a visit. When keen enough you won't miss to see the rare amphibians like Chameleon and reptiles like Green mamba that have a glowing skin. As one goes up you'll notice there's massive deforestation amidst reafforestation in a steady competition and tracing back on history it dates to 1955 to 2004 where over 50% of indigenous forests in our motherland were replaced by exotic tree plantations and our native kinsmen who live at the edges of this protected area majorly practising subsistence farming reflect the severe logging in the past that has left us with few chunks of indigenous forest. A first timer in Vuria must definitely marvel at the landscape of entire Taita. Struggling way up the peak through the road that was maintained long time ago and sections of it are heavily affected by landslides one will notice the several streams in the water catchment area dripping down crystal clear natural product that is free from any contamination. Towering tree ferns dominate the area with several areas offering paranomic views of the entire valleys and settlements all the way from Voi, Sagalla Hills, Teita Sisal, Mwatate, Bura, Mghange, Mwashuma, Kishushe, Mwakitau not forgetting the neighbouring quartzite islebergs of Iyale, SuSu and Mwangoji of Chawia Forest. On a clear day one is capable of having a clear sight of the Snow Mountain tallest in Africa; The Mt Kilimanjaro from Vuria Hill and don't forget the area offers a beautiful Sundowner too. Whenever it's said the higher you go the cooler it becomes it's so real from Vuria and one will notice it does not only becomes cooler rather very strong wind currents at an average speed of 30 KPH with temperatures ranging from 9°C to 20°C on a Sunny day. Most times of the year the area is characterized by thick fog and sharp drop temperatures. Apart from being the highest point in Coast Region it serves as one of the most protected areas since it is the largest designated transmitter site of Communication Authority of Kenya and all radio stations, TV stations, Kenya power, national Intelligence, DCI, Kenya Police, Multinational Companies rely on this area for their communication to be transitioned to their target audience and place. Such an area of high frequencies is also a hazardous place since there's too much radiation and majority are trying to get the figures low by ensuring transmittance is through Frequency Modulation( FM) and not the short wave medium (SWM), etcetera. Land rates from this area are remitted to the County Government of Taita Taveta except for Kenya Broadcasting Corporation that acquired their Title Deed and am tempted to say the 400,000 per FY in the Finance Bill document for companies hoisting their masts should come with other CSR goodies to the surrounding communities. On the way down one can decide to go through Mwanda where at the slopes of Vuria there are beautiful caves with rich history.
